In recent days, the case of Kamil Abrego Garcia, the innocent father who was “mistakenly” seized in Maryland and deported to the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador has cast a spotlight on President Trump’s dangerous and unprecedented violations of due process rights.
Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III, a conservative Reagan appointee who sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, recently ruled on the case. His opinion condemned the Administration’s arrogant and heartless behavior in almost prophetic terms, that echo far beyond his bench: “This [behavior by the Trump Administration] should be shocking not only to judges, but to the intuitive sense of liberty that Americans far removed from courthouses still hold dear.”
This is not a right versus left or Republican versus Democrat issue; it is a matter of Democracy versus Dictatorship. Due process is what stands between us and lawlessness and political repression by any administration; and in this case, one openly committed to seizing illegitimate power.
Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland travelled to El Salvador this week on Abrego Garcia’s behalf. He concluded his post-trip remarks with a reminder that, “This is an issue for every American.”
To dig into what is happening, why, and what people are doing to oppose this terrifying extrajudicial dark alliance between Trump and self-styled, “coolest dictator” Bukele, we have invited some real experts.
