High-stakes elections are underway in Brazil. Far-right presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro won Brazil’s first round by two points on October 4th. The second round is set to take place on October 25. The United States and Meta, in particular, have been acting to sway the vote in favor of far-right Trump ally Flavio Bolsonaro.

What is at stake for Brazil’s democracy, and what could the outcome mean for the rest of Latin America?

Join us for an in-depth conversation with journalists and human rights advocates reporting from Brazil.

Our guests will examine the threat of U.S. interference in Brazil’s elections, the role of social media platforms in shaping political outcomes, and the broader implications for democracy across Latin America. As Trump’s so-called “Donroe Doctrine” escalates attacks on the region, these conversations are needed now more than ever.

Join us this Wednesday, October 21, at 4 PM PT!

Hear from journalists and human rights advocates on the ground in Brazil as they discuss what’s at stake in the country’s elections and the future of democracy across Latin America.

Panelists:

Maria Luisa Mendonça is the Director of the Network for Social Justice and Human Rights in Brazil. She holds a PhD in Human Geography from the University of São Paulo.

Michael Fox is a longtime reporter and Brazil-based journalist. He is a former editor of NACLA’s Report on the Americas and the producer and host of the podcasts Brazil on Fire and Under the Shadow.

Nicole Froio is a Brazilian writer, researcher, and journalist based in Rio de Janeiro. She writes about women’s rights, digital cultures, and popular movements.

Brian Mier has lived in Brazil for over 30 years and holds master’s degrees from Loyola University Chicago and the University of London. He is an editor at Panamerican Dispatch, a freelance journalist, and co-host of the weekly Portuguese-language web TV program Globalistas on Brasil 247.

At a moment when democracy across Latin America faces growing threats of foreign interference and political repression, it’s more important than ever to hear directly from those on the ground.

The webinar will take place on Zoom, with Spanish interpretation available. The event will also be streamed on YouTube and Facebook.

By Michael Fox

Almost 20 years ago, I had this idea for a website that would help to facilitate getting news directly from Latin America into the United States.

It would focus on translating articles and analysis from Spanish and Portuguese into English. The goal is to offer alternative perspectives to the mainstream or U.S. government narrative about the region.

Last week, we finally launched it.

It’s called Panamerican Dispatch. It is more necessary than ever.

U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed attention on Latin America as not seen in decades. Under his “Donroe Doctrine”, Trump has attacked boats in the Caribbean, invaded Venezuela and tightened the screws of the blockade on Cuba. He has helped right-wing allies win big victories across the region.

There are major concerns for the future of democracy across Latin America and the legitimacy of upcoming elections in the region. That is why Panamerican Dispatch is needed today.

For the next two months, we’re focused almost exclusively on the Brazilian elections.

The first round is on October 4. Trump recently posted on Truth Social that Brazil was his latest challenge. He’s been throwing his weight around ahead of the vote, attacking president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and pressuring the country in support of his candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of the former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro.

This is a project of The Real News, in partnership with Global Exchange.

I’m so excited to be collaborating again with GX. We go back a long way, to my work on the Green Festival in the early 2000s and helping to lead and translate on reality tours over the years.

Here is some of my most important reporting about this year’s elections in Brazil. This video looks at how Trump’s show is hanging over the elections. This podcast episode dives into Brazil’s battle against fake news and how Trump and Silicon Valley are fighting to roll it back

You can check out Panamerican Dispatch at www.PanamericanDispatch.com. You can also sign up for the Substack to consistent news and reporting. We will also be holding a webinar around the elections on in the coming weeks. We hope you can join.
