Almost 20 years ago, I had this idea for a website that would help to facilitate getting news directly from Latin America into the United States.
It would focus on translating articles and analysis from Spanish and Portuguese into English. The goal is to offer alternative perspectives to the mainstream or U.S. government narrative about the region.
Last week, we finally launched it.
It’s called Panamerican Dispatch. It is more necessary than ever.
U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed attention on Latin America as not seen in decades. Under his “Donroe Doctrine”, Trump has attacked boats in the Caribbean, invaded Venezuela and tightened the screws of the blockade on Cuba. He has helped right-wing allies win big victories across the region.
There are major concerns for the future of democracy across Latin America and the legitimacy of upcoming elections in the region. That is why Panamerican Dispatch is needed today.
For the next two months, we’re focused almost exclusively on the Brazilian elections.
The first round is on October 4. Trump recently posted on Truth Social that Brazil was his latest challenge. He’s been throwing his weight around ahead of the vote, attacking president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and pressuring the country in support of his candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of the former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro.
This is a project of The Real News, in partnership with Global Exchange.
I’m so excited to be collaborating again with GX. We go back a long way, to my work on the Green Festival in the early 2000s and helping to lead and translate on reality tours over the years.
Here is some of my most important reporting about this year’s elections in Brazil. This video looks at how Trump’s show is hanging over the elections. This podcast episode dives into Brazil’s battle against fake news and how Trump and Silicon Valley are fighting to roll it back
You can check out Panamerican Dispatch at www.PanamericanDispatch.com. You can also sign up for the Substack to consistent news and reporting. We will also be holding a webinar around the elections on in the coming weeks. We hope you can join.
