On June 21, under the banner “The weapons that kill us are the same,” communities across Mexico and the U.S. mobilized in a powerful call for peace. More than ten cities came together for the Binational Day of Action for Peace and Justice, led by the People’s Movement for Peace and Justice (PMPJ).
PMPJ is a growing coalition of organizations, including Global Exchange, Black Lives Matter South Bend, North American Indigenous Center of NY, Newtown Action Alliance, and dozens more, uniting victims, migrants, Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant communities, and grassroots organizations from both countries.
The day began with a hybrid international press conference from Mexico City, linking acts of resistance across borders. From migrant shelters in Tapachula to Afro-descendant communities in Cuajinicuilapa, San Marcos, and Las Vigas; from the Nahua communities of La Matlalcuéyetl in Tlaxcala to the Monument to the Revolution in Mexico City, communities raised their voices. In the U.S., solidarity echoed from the streets of the Bronx to inside a New Jersey detention center, through gatherings in Florida and Indiana, and all the way to the Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne.
The day also marked the culmination of a week of high-level meetings between Mexican presidential cabinet members and a U.S. delegation of gun violence survivors, frontline organizers, and policy advocates. These meetings focused on the escalating violence fueled by U.S. firearm exports and systemic impunity in Mexico. PMPJ will continue to press for binational solutions to end the flow of weapons from the U.S. to Mexico and the violence that accompanies it.
