Honduras: Close-up on the Elections 2025

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Close-Up on Honduras Elections 2025! If you missed it, the webinar is now available to watch in English and Spanish.

On November 30, Hondurans will head to the polls to elect a new president, Congress, and municipal authorities. The stakes could not be higher. The political climate is polarized, institutions are fragile, and malign forces, at home and in Washington, are maneuvering to undermine democracy.

During our discussion, panelists underscored why this moment matters:

  • “The gloves are off.” As Amelia Frank-Vitale warned, U.S. leaders today are not even pretending to defend democracy or human rights. They are “actively hostile… and the gloves are off.” This changes the stakes for Honduran social movements facing external pressure and internal crises.
  • Lucía Vigil Saybe (CESPAD) mapped out the dangers: weak electoral institutions, political interference, electoral violence, and narco-money in campaigns. International observers, she stressed, can help deter abuses and reduce violence.
  • Karen Spring (HSN) showed how Honduras is caught in a larger geopolitical narrative, with right-wing U.S. politicians comparing Honduras to Venezuela or Cuba to justify interference.
  • Ted Lewis (Global Exchange) reminded us that independence is key: both CESPAD and Global Exchange refuse U.S. government funding, so our work is grounded in solidarity, not foreign interests.

Apply to join the international observation mission. From November 27 to December 2, Global Exchange, CESPAD, and the Honduras Solidarity Network (HSN) will organize an international delegation to observe the elections alongside Honduran partners. This is about global solidarity: standing with movements that risk everything to defend democracy.

  • Apply here
  • Dates in country: Nov 27 – Dec 2 (arrive 11/27; trainings 11/28–29; election 11/30; debrief 12/1; depart 12/2)
  • Deadline: Sept 26 (rolling review; apply early).

Even if you can’t travel, you can still play a critical role: share the recordings, raise awareness in your networks, and press elected officials to respect Honduran sovereignty and reject U.S. interference.

This is a defining moment for democracy in Honduras. Let’s meet it with solidarity.
