Al Gore is at it again. The most prominent establishment voice on climate change, former Vice President Al Gore is hosting a global event September 14 to put the reality of climate chaos up in the face of people everywhere.
The Climate Reality Project emphasizes the power of the fossil fuel industry to skew the debate about climate change away from the facts—we are destroying the planet’s ability to support human life—and thus the only effective counter-balance will be mobilizing masses of well-informed citizens.
The project is correct in assuming that reality is our most powerful weapon. People need to grasp the intensity of the crisis confronting us. Major cities such as Miami and Houston will go under water—and that will happen even if we were to implement radical lifestyle changes right now.
The organizers of the Climate Reality Project understand that many people are vulnerable to the lies and distortions of the fossil fuel industry, so they are organizing a global educational event September 14 to get the basic facts of climate change out to the world while we still have some time to save humanity from itself.
Their promo material sums up the idea: “What can change in a day? Everything. On September 14, the world will focus its attention on the truth about the climate crisis. For 24 hours, we will all live in reality. Pick a faraway place or a city near you. Make it yours for one day. We’re hitting every time zone — but only once. 7 p.m. in your time zone. Choose a location and get involved.”
As Al Gore puts it: “24 Hours of Reality will focus the world’s attention on the full truth, scope, scale and impact of the climate crisis. To remove the doubt. Reveal the deniers. And catalyze urgency around an issue that affects every one of us.”
