Defending Democracy in Sacramento with Lessons from Latin America

In the United States today, attacks on the integrity of elections have become routine. People have lost trust in official sources of information and a political divide is developing beyond values and policy into different worlds of truth.  

We can learn from the experience of our neighbors to the south who have long dealt with instability of democratic institutions, corruption, and repression of civic and labor organizations.

Visiting Sacramento are three prominent Latin American leaders, here to exchange stories and inspire action as part of the nationwide Democracy Defenders Roadshow.

Omar Gómez Trejo is a human rights lawyer best known as special prosecutor of Mexico’s Ayotzinapa case of forced disappearances of student activists. Trejo sorted through a web of lies at different levels of government seeking justice for the students and their families.  

Mynor Alonzo is a social movement strategist and co-founder of FOCO, a Guatemalan social research organization dedicated to strengthening Guatemalan democracy.

Ernesto Ledesma is an investigative journalist and co-founder of Rompeviento TV, a digital platform focused on human rights, democratic accountability, and coverage of social movements in Mexico.
