Since taking office, the Trump administration has picked fights with allies around the world—threatening and imposing tariffs, demanding larger payments from NATO members, and conditioning U.S. support for Ukraine in exchange for access to natural resources. All of it done in the name of “helping American workers” and “bringing jobs home.” None of it has worked. And now, Trump faces a crucial test: will he stand with U.S. workers by raising wages, strengthening protections, and ending the exploitation legalized under the U.S.–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA)? Or will he once again betray them by keeping this corrupt deal intact? We already know the answer—and we must make it clear that this betrayal is unacceptable.
On October 1, Congress opened a 90-day public comment period ahead of the mandatory USMCA review. Hundreds of U.S. organizations, led by the Trade Justice Coalition and Public Citizen, are calling for urgent changes to stop Trump’s rigged trade deal from further harming workers, migrants, and the environment. Alongside Mexican farmers, unions, Indigenous leaders, and human rights defenders, Global Exchange helped form the Citizens Alliance for Human Rights in USMCA, building a united front across North America for equality and justice. Since 1994, when the first NAFTA was signed, we’ve believed that workers in Mexico, the U.S., and Canada must fight together to stop corporate power. This week, we convened the first virtual trinational assembly to plan collective action for rights, equity, and dignity across borders. Next, we’ll be participating jointly in public hearings and consultations, including those convened by the U.S. government in November.
