Overview

On this Reality Tour to Vietnam, we’ll learn about the history, impact, and recovery process from foreign interventions including Vichy French colonial occupation, the Japanese invasion during WWII, and the brutal protracted American War from 1950 – 1975. All throughout the trip, we will experience Vietnamese cultural and natural heritage while exchanging with local villagers in the context of their work and even homes.

On the outskirts of Hanoi, we’ll visit ‘HOLD THE FUTURE’ center, an NGO that helps disabled teenagers access health care, rehabilitation, vocational training, employment, and integrate into society or TÒHE a Vietnamese social enterprise with the mission of providing disadvantaged children with a playground to learn, practice creativity along with artistic experience activities.

We will meet with a demining organization working to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by cluster bombs and munitions remaining in Central Vietnam since the War’s end. We will additionally explore Cu Chi tunnels, a gigantic underground tunnel system, was originally constructed under the jungle terrain, connecting tunnels among the hamlets and communes during the Indochina war (1945-1954) against the French colonialists. It served as hiding spots for Vietnam revolutionary troops to discreetly commute between regions and evade French scouts.

Other highlights include visiting floating fishing villages; exchanging with local villagers, families, and market workers; visiting Tu Hieu pagoda known as the ‘root pagoda’ of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, touring Hoi An, a well-preserved trading port dating to the 1400s; exploring Tam Coc river, Tam Coc cave known as a part of the Trang An scenic landscape complex in Ninh Binh, the World Heritage site (UNESCO), and more.

Additionally, traveling from North to South Vietnam just before Tet (the New Year), you’ll sense the growing excitement in the air as the country prepares for its most important holiday. From local markets gradually filling with flowers and festive goods to families beginning their spring cleaning and food preparations, you’ll catch an authentic glimpse into the rhythms of daily life during this special time. Though not yet in full celebration mode, the subtle signs of Tet are everywhere—offering a unique chance to witness the calm before the holiday bursts into full bloom. This journey lets you experience Vietnam in transition, as tradition and anticipation quietly weave through each destination.
