Yesterday, we came together to honor International Migrants Day, a day filled with powerful action, solidarity, and hope. As part of the People’s Movement for Peace and Justice, encompassing more than 200 people and 80 organizations and communities from Mexico and the United States, we raised our voices. We recognize that from Tegucigalpa to Tacoma, the guns that kill us are the same. That militarization protects no one. That our current economic priorities favor the rich few at the expense of the many.
Standing Together for Justice and Dignity
At 7:00 AM PST, we kicked off the day with a press conference in New York City hosted by Global Exchange. The event set the tone for the day, emphasizing our collective resistance and outlining the steps we’ll take in the months ahead. The press conference was broadcast live on RompevientoTV and Global Exchange’s Facebook page.
Voices of Resistance and Resilience
Throughout the day, testimonials poured in from communities who are on the frontlines of this struggle. Gatherings across the Americas underscored the shared experiences of Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and migrant communities, as well as the families of missing persons who continue to seek justice.
An important message from the People’s Movement for Peace and Justice:
“We mobilize on both sides of the border in defense of our internationally recognized rights and for the universal right to free mobility, which has been exercised ancestrally by our people for thousands of years before the European conquest and invasion of our lands and territories. At the same time, we are rising from our roots, with dignity and hope, in resistance to the violence faced by our communities.” Read the full statement from the People’s Movement for Peace and Justice here.
Moving Forward
While International Migrants Day is a moment to reflect, it is also a call to action. The injustices faced by migrant communities demand our sustained commitment. We will not be intimidated by systems of oppression or silenced by threats of mass arrests and deportations. Instead, we rise together, empowered by our collective vision of a world where every person can live with dignity and hope.
Let us continue to amplify these voices, challenge oppressive systems, and build a future rooted in justice and equity for all.
