By ordering a drone strike-assassination of Qasem Soleimani and other top Iranian military officials as they were leaving the Bagdad Airport, President Trump has forced our nation to the brink of a senseless war with Iran.
War is horror. And we should do everything in our power to avoid it.
The dismantling of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action between Iran, the United States, Russia, France, China, the UK, and Germany by the Trump Administration has removed a valuable framework for diplomacy, with no rational replacement proposed by the President or the Congressional GOP.
Recently, we saw the tragic consequences of foreign policy executed by recklessness and aggression, culminating in the assassination of an Iranian general, the firing of ballistic missiles from Iran to bases housing U.S. forces, and the tragic downing of a Ukrainian airliner in Iranian airspace.
After this latest exchange of hostilities, we hope the United States and Iran are on a path to de-escalation, but we must speak out against the reckless and highly authoritarian brinkmanship of the Trump Administration.
Now is the time to make our voices heard.
In early January of 2020, tens of thousands of us took to the streets across the United States to send the message loud and clear: No War with Iran.
We must continue the pressure.
