The organizations of Mexico and the United States, united under the People’s Movement for Peace and Justice, express our deep pain and indignation over the death of our colleague Marco Suástegui, who was attacked on April 18 in the city of Acapulco.
Marco Suástegui, a fearless leader of the Council of Ejidos and Communities Opposed to the Parota Dam, dedicated his life to defending the ancestral lands of the Cacahuatepec Communal Assets against destructive megaprojects. He stood fearlessly against the privatization of Acapulco’s beaches and the theft of our natural resources.
In 2023, Marco brought his voice to the Summit for Peace, sharing stories of struggle, resilience, and suffering from Guerrero, and directly holding the Mexican State accountable for the violence engulfing the region.
His assassination strikes at the very heart of our movements for human rights and justice across Mexico and the United States. Marco’s spirit calls on us not to be silent — it demands that we embrace his family, his community, and his cause with renewed strength and unwavering commitment.
Therefore we demand immediate and uncompromising justice: the identification and punishment of all those directly and indirectly responsible for this crime. We demand an end to the violence against defenders of human and environmental rights in Mexico.
We also denounce that, according to official statistics, it is highly likely that the weapons used to murder Marco originated from the United States. We hold arms manufacturing companies and the U.S. government responsible for their role in this bloodshed. We urgently call for the establishment of a binational Human Rights Mechanism to halt the flood of violence that continues to steal lives and destroy the fabric of our societies.
Marco Suástegui’s struggle lives on in each of us. His memory demands action. His cause demands justice. His spirit demands that we fight — harder, louder, and together.
Las organizaciones de México y Estados Unidos, parte del Movimiento de los Pueblos por la Paz y la Justicia expresamos nuestro profundo dolor e indignación por el fallecimiento de nuestro compañero Marco Suástegui luego de haber sido atacado el pasado 18 de abril en la Ciudad de Acapulco.
Marco Suástegui, integrante y líder del Consejo de Ejidos y Comunidades Opositoras a la presa la Parota, defendió por años los territorios campesinos de los Bienes Comunales de Cacahuatepec que estuvieron en riesgo de ser afectados por la construcción de dicho megaproyecto y defendió las playas de Acapulco proyecto de privatización y despojo de bienes comunes naturales.
En 2023, Marco Suástegui se sumó a la convocatoria de la Cumbre por la Paz donde compartió su experiencia de lucha y con la violencia en el estado de Guerrero, señalando la responsabilidad del Estado mexicano frente a la violencia en la región.
Su muerte es un golpe a la defensa de derechos humanos y la lucha por la justicia en la región México – Estados Unidos y el dolor y la indignación por su asesinato nos convoca a abrazar a su familia, su comunidad y su causa con fuerza. Por ello, demandamos justicia inmediata, el castigo a los responsable directos e indirectos de este asesinato y el fin a la violencia contra personas defensoras de derechos humanos y ambientales en México.
Denunciamos también que de acuerdo con las estadísticas oficiales, es muy posible que las armas que mataron a Marco vinieron de Estados Unidos, por lo que señalamos la responsabilidad de las empresas productos y del gobierno de ese país, al tiempo que demandamos un mecanismo binacional de Derechos Humanos que contribuya a detener la violencia que continúa cobrando vidas valiosísimas y destruyendo nuestras sociedades.
