Save Wild and Sacred Australia from Big Oil

Guest Blog from True Cost of Chevron Network Member Teri Shore, Program Director, Turtle Island Restoration Network

Please help our allies in Australia in their struggle against Chevron!

Chevron is part of a consortium, including BP, Shell, BHP Billiton and Woodside Petroleum that has joined forces to push a new natural gas refining facility along the wild and sacred Kimberley coast in Northwestern Australia.

If allowed to move forward, the project will pump up to 39 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year into the air (a 50% increase in Western Australia’s current total emissions) and release up to 66,000 tons per year of other noxious and toxic gas emissions, such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes.

Last year, two leading Australian activists from the Kimberley joined Global Exchange in Houston to protest at Chevron’s Annual Shareholder Meeting and to contribute to our True Cost of Chevron: An Alternative Annual Report. They told us how Chevron is destroying their fragile ecosystems and splitting their communities with false economic promises.

Now they’ve asked us to help apply international pressure by calling on the Australian government to reject this project.

TAKE ACTION

Send a message by March 28 to Premier Colin Barnett and the Environmental Protection Authority of Western Australia to reject the Kimberley natural gas project!
