An Open Call to Individuals, Organizations, and Communities in Mexico and the US to Commemorate the Binational Day for Peace and Justice
The organizations, collectives, and community leaders in Mexico and the US, part of the People’s Movement for Peace and Justice, call on all groups and individuals across Mexico and the US to raise their voices to demand an end to the unprecedented violence across our region and the immediate implementation of a binational agenda for peace and justice.
From the beginning of this administration, the Government of the United States has launched an attack on immigrant communities, sustained by terror and misinformation, with the intention of destroying working families and communities simply because they are immigrants. Millions of children, youth, parents, and elders are living in fear.
At the same time, public welfare programs, resources, and institutions are being defunded, dismantled, and cancelled, putting millions of families at risk of losing healthcare and falling into poverty—while the executive branch unleashes business opportunities for gun production and other toxic industries.
Meanwhile in Mexico, despite the expansion of social programs, armed violence continues to grow, and the National Guard is being used primarily to detain migrants—keeping these and all historically marginalized communities under attack and, in many places, disrupting community life.
All of this, while the governments of Mexico and the US prepare to sit at the table to review the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), seeking to maintain a system of cross-border exploitation.
In the face of this unbearable reality, we call on all sectors of society to take to the streets this June 21st to demand:
- An end to the attacks against migrant communities across the region and full respect for due process and human rights.
- Protection for human rights defenders, land defenders, and journalists.
- An end to armed violence by halting unregulated gun production and marketing, and by passing legislation that centers gun violence prevention and control—such as the Stop Arming Cartels Act.
- An end to all forms of economic violence against communities, including the cutting of welfare programs in the US and the exploitation of Indigenous communities by corporations extracting resources from their lands.
- The implementation of a binational agenda for peace and justice, consented to and endorsed by thousands of communities, groups, and networks across the Mexico-US region—such as the one produced by PMPJ.
In solidarity,
The People’s Movement for Peace and Justice
