Mexico Violence: What’s Going On?

We will look again at Mexico’s difficult challenge of facing down an increasingly violent drug war — in the context of unprecedented US pressures and growing political turbulence in Latin America.

To help us understand what is happening and what Mexico’s options are we have invited Jorge Luis Sierra, President of the Border Center for Journalists and Bloggers; and Laura Carlsen, Director of the Americas Program, Center for International Policy for an online discussion.

Jorge Luis Sierra works at the intersection of cyber security, technology and investigative journalism. He heads the Border Center for Journalists and Bloggers, a non-profit organization dedicated to developing quality investigative journalism in border areas, affected by corruption and violence. He has collaborated with Global Exchange for decades and wrote on ”Mexico -United States Relations and Drug Trafficking” in a major study of The Armed Forces in Mexico produced by Global Exchange in the year 2000.

Laura Carlsen, is an important voice in the US-Mexico cross border dialogue. She is both a brilliant analyst of Mexico-US relations and a highly effective cross-border organizer. For more than a decade she has been a tireless and leading critic of US-Mexico security policy and the ever growing militarization it has fostered. She has collaborated with and supported Global Exchange in every important cross border initiative we’ve undertaken since 2006.

Ted Lewis, Global Exchange US Mexico Program Director, will moderate.
