In order to illustrate the links between oil dependence, terrorism and war, Global Exchange and Rainforest Action Network are distributing "SUV violations."
These SUV tickets are intended to show people that gas-guzzling carries a very high cost. They are targeted at those individuals who, by choosing to drive an SUV, are consuming far more than their fair share of the earth's natural resources. Our hope is that by illustrating the connections between oil dependence and conflict, we can shift public opinions around our oil consumption. The idea is to make driving a gas-guzzling SUV socially unacceptable.
Note that this is perfectly legal. Ticketing involves no property destruction. It is no more invasive than putting, say, a flier advertising a car wash or a dry cleaner on someone's windshield.
