SAN FRANCISCO —Global Exchange Campaign Director Nick Magel today released the following statement in response to the Bush Administration's proposed automotive fuel efficiency standards of 31.6 mpg by 2015, rather than adopting the already strong emissions requirements law passed by California and over a dozen other states, sitting before the EPA.

"Let's be clear: with this proposal, the Bush Administration is cowing to the influence of the auto industry rather than protecting the interests and health of the American people. Not only does the administration propose regulations that land far short of real steps to curb climate change, they yield to he auto industry lobbyists by attempting to block CA, and over a dozen other states, from implementing strong vehicle emission standards. Standards that would truly jumpstart a stubborn industry towards achieving zero emission vehicles."

"Earth day started in the US 38 years ago. Now it's time for the US to again be a leader in curbing climate change, and break our addiction to oil. Not hijack a proud environmental day to create a stage for the likes of Toyota, Ford and GM, to roll out their empty rhetoric"

"The proposal is full of double talk. The Bush administration hails the proposal as a strong step toward breaking our addiction to oil, but in turn blocks implementation of the already existing Pavely Law that sets stronger emission standards.

"The sad irony of this Earth Day announcement is that it only highlights the Bush administration and the auto industry's watered down solutions to climate change."

"To give GM, Toyota, and Ford the poster boys of carbon emissions top billing on Earth Day, not only highlights the deep relationship with a polluting industry and this administration, it exemplifies the half measures our government and industry in putting forth to curb climate change"

California's AB 1493, also called the Pavley Law, seeks to establish vehicle greenhouse gas pollution standards far beyond the Administrations proposed regulations.

The Freedom From Oil Campaign is working to end America's oil addiction, stop oil wars, and curb global warming by convincing the auto industry to dramatically improve fuel efficiency and eliminate vehicle greenhouse gas emissions.
