Denmark : Climate Change Conference
Delegation for Climate Justice

December 05, 2009 - December 18, 2009

Global Exchange Reality Tours have helped thousands connect firsthand with people and cultures around the world, and to return home with a deeper understanding, a sense of empowerment, and the tools to affect change. Join Global Exchange's Executive Director and Danish co-founder Kirsten Moller as we engage in the global social movement to address Climate Change.

In 2012 the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions runs out. In order to keep the worldwide process alive and working, there is an urgent need for a new climate agreement. At the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, December 2009 (COP15 - the fifteenth conference of parties of 192 nations), delegates from around the world will meet to hopefully agree upon plans for the next commitment period. This is a critical and exciting time when the global community has the opportunity and mandate to come up with an agreement that is both aggressive and fair.

In addition to national representatives and negotiators there will be gatherings of grassroots climate activists from around the world meeting to influence the outcome of the final Copenhagen agreement. Global Exchange's Delegation for Climate Justice is designed to offer participants multiple opportunites to connect with other activists and engage with the events in Copenhagen. We have consciously avoided establishing a set agenda for the trip so that delegates may choose the events which fit their needs, interests, and desired level of activity.

Our delegates will room together in a co-ed dormitory, so there will be nightly opportunities to discuss options and make plans. In addition, our delegation will meet formally with Global Exchange climate change staff at least 3 times per week to share experiences, help each other interpret events, discuss future options, and coordinate plans for the next few days.

Running in parallel to the official U.N. Climate Change Conference is the People's Climate Summit, Klimaforum09. Klimaforum09 is an alternative, civil society forum on climate change patterned after the World Social Forum. It is designed to explore options for addressing climate change that are consistent with social and economic justice. We expect most of our delegates will engage heavily in the seminars, performances, and roundtables offered at Klimaforum09.

Some delegates may choose to become active in the many demonstrations already planned for Copenhagen. We will publish a schedule of demonstrations that we know about and update it to the best of our abilities as new demonstrations are planned. Global Exchange encourages delegates to engage in whatever way feels comfortable, including nonviolent, lawful demonstration.

Some delegates may choose to apply to become part of Global Exchange's official delegation to the U.N. Climate Change Conference. There is a separate application process for participation at this level. Applications for participation as a Global Exchange delegate must be completed and approved no later than November 6, 2009.

Delegates wishing to find out about Denmark's approach to sustainability will have an opportunity to explore Denmark's energy accomplishments and learn about Europe's vibrant movement for sustainability.
