|Dr. Howard Waitzkin will be speaking on the state of public health and medicine and what we can do to as health activists, based on the research and prescriptions for better public health outlined in his latest book Medicine and Public Health at the End of Empire. As well as being a physician, author and sociologist, he is co-author of the single-payer national health bill which was introduced into the US legislature as HR676 and S703, introduced respectively by Rep. John Conyers and Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2009.
In the mid-2000's, Dr. Waitzkin founded the Civilian Medical Resource Network to help military personnel and veterans find the treatment that they needed to return to health and receive medical discharges and benefits, if needed. Today the CMRN (www.civilianmedicalresources.net ) has a volunteer core of seven on-call healthcare professionals and several support people with Jeff Englehart, a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, serving as the part-time coordinator. Howard Waitzkin's March 8 talk is the public keynote talk for the GI Rights Network conference, hosted by the Santa Cruz group of the national GI Rights Network (www.girightsnetwork.org ) and co-sponsored by the RCNV and Santa Cruz WILPF. The Santa Cruz GIRN group is a program of the RCNV.
