International Elections Observation Organizing Apprentice --Colombia 2010
International Elections Observation Organizing Apprentice --Colombia 2010

This apprenticeship (based in San Francisco, CA) is an exciting opportunity to learn how international elections observation is organized by participating at the heart of the process.

Colombia, holds pivotal national elections early next year under a cloud of political corruption and indictments. A third of Colombia's Congress has been forced to resign. At the same time the United States is negotiating to expand its military capacity in Colombia, illegal armed actors control large swaths of territory, and the US-Colombia free trade agreement -- negotiated by the Bush Administration -- hangs in the balance. This complex and difficult climate led Colombia's leading civil society elections watchdog—the Misión de Observación Electoral (MOE) to invite Global Exchange to help organize international contingents in support of their election protection and observation work both prior to and during next year's congressional and presidential elections. MOE is a non governmental civic association linking Colombia's three main labor federations with human rights groups, Afro-Colombia and Indigenous rights organizations; and leading research centers.

The apprenticeship will work with the project director on many aspects of the project including identification and recruitment of international observers, correspondence with partners, media monitoring, website maintenance, and public relations.

Applicant should have strong writing and communications skills in English and Spanish; Specialized knowledge of Colombia and its regions are a plus. Non-partisanship, abundant energy, and dedication to complete and truthful reporting are essential.

Ideal length of apprenticeship is 6 months+. Position is currently unfunded.

Please contact Ted Lewis --- ted(at)globalexchange.org with questions.
