Understanding the Recent Popular Uprising in Turkey

Join the CPE for a film and discussion that will provide context for understanding the wave of protests that has swept Turkey in recent months. We begin by screening the award-winning film Ekumenopolis (“City Without Limits”), a brilliant documentary that examines how neo-liberal policies have changed the face of Istanbul in the name of “modernization.”

After the film, a panel discussion featuring members of the Bay Area Turkish community will share eye-witness reports from Gezi Park, where the recent protests sparked an uprising throughout Turkey. Panelists will explore links between the Turkish protests with "Arab Spring" uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa, and will also examine links between Turkey and the US & European-style Occupy movements. Open dialogue is welcome and encouraged.
