New coalitions form around controversies

Nicaragua Network Hotline
June 07, 2005
New coalitions form around controversies A group of political leaders from parties such as Bolanos' Alliance for the Republic, the Conservative Party, the Nicaraguan Christian Path, and the Party of Nicaraguan Resistance have come together to form an anti-pact, anti-fraud coalition called the "Common Front." Herty Lewites, a presidential hopeful for 2006 and head of the Movement for the Rescue of Sandinismo, also a part of the coalition, announced that this is not an alliance geared towards participation in the 2006 elections. Its creation was to communicate that these groups will be present and accounted for in the electoral process of the future. Many are interested, however, to see how the new coalition's role develops in the coming election year. Political actors Arnoldo Alemán and Daniel Ortega, who are being called "the two mafias," are the embodiment of the groups against which the new alliance stands. The Common Front has asserted their belief that they are responsible to save Nicaragua. Polls show that the general population supports the Common Front and that 78.5% hold a negative opinion of Daniel Ortega, 76.4% of Arnoldo Alemán, and 56.1% of President Enrique Bolaños. Rejection of the current administration is seen as a steady trend in public opinion.
