Mexican NGOs Send a Letter to the U.S. Congress

Mexican organizations alert Congress to the alarming human rights situation in Mexico

Red todos los derechos para todos y todas
May 08, 2009

In light of increased military abuse of civilians and militarization of public security in Mexico, more than 60 Mexican non-governmental human rights organizations outline their concerns regarding military assistance from the United States to Mexico. They urge for an approach that is more comprehensive and respectful of the human and civil rights of the Mexican population, specifically asking the United States Congress not to allocate funds or direct programs to the armed forces. Instead, they propose a change of paradigm to combat the factors that cause drug trafficking and violence. This problem must be solved by improving access to drug treatment in the United States, reducing demand for narcotics in both countries, reducing the flow of arms from the United States to Mexico, and directing United States aid to funding programs that address root social problems and strengthen civil institutions.
