CAFTA Passes Amid Protests

Resource Center of the Americas
March 09, 2005
Across the country, more than 2,000 Hondurans took to the streets March 8 to protest the National Congress's ratification of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). The demonstration was organized by the Popular Resistance, one of many organizations that believe CAFTA will only serve to increase unemployment and further impoverish the country's agricultural sector. On March 3, CAFTA was approved by 100 of the 128 legislators, who subsequently fled the Congress building in order to avoid the protesters. The Salvadoran legislature approved the agreement December 17, 2004.
