Protesters clashed with riot police who fired tear gas in the highland town of Santa Cruz del Quiché, in the eighth day of protests around the country over a free-trade deal with the United States. President Óscar Berger signed the accord into law on Tuesday, as a teacher was killed and several people seriously injured when hundreds of police officers and soldiers tried to disperse a protest in the Huehuetenango region, near Mexico.
