PROTESTERS AND POLICE CLASH

New York Times
March 17, 2005
Protesters clashed with riot police who fired tear gas in the highland town of Santa Cruz del Quiché, in the eighth day of protests around the country over a free-trade deal with the United States. President Óscar Berger signed the accord into law on Tuesday, as a teacher was killed and several people seriously injured when hundreds of police officers and soldiers tried to disperse a protest in the Huehuetenango region, near Mexico. Witnesses said the security forces used live ammunition. (Reuters)
