Ten Things You Can Do
for Fair Trade Farmers
Educate
- Buy Fair Trade certified coffee. Let businesses that do carry TransFair certified coffee know that you appreciate it by buying their coffee.
- Organize an educational presentation with your friends, at a local school, church, or community group about the history of coffee trade and the important alternative of Fair Trade. We can supply a video showing Fair Trade from a Nicaraguan farmer's perspective, speakers and educational materials.
- Write a Letter to the Editor about your concern for coffee farmers and your commitment to seeing more Fair Trade coffee in supermarkets and in local cafés--we have a sample article you can use to build on!
Advocate
- Ask for Fair Trade coffee where you shop. Drop a note in the suggestion box at your local grocery store or café or even chat with the manager! Let businesses that do carry Fair Trade Certified coffee know that you appreciate it by buying their coffee.
- Connect to the Fair Trade Coffee Campaign listserve to keep updated! Contact fairtrade@globalexchange.org for information on how you can help build Fair Trade in your community!
- Get your church, city or campus to pass a Fair Trade Coffee Purchasing Restriction.
Organize
- Demand that Folgers start selling Fair Trade coffee. Send a FREE FAX to Folgers from our website. Organize a Day of Education & Action at your local supermarket to educate consumers about the coffee crisis and get them to ask Folgers for Fair Trade coffee!! It's easy to do! - Start a campaign in your community or on your campus! Download our new Coffee Action Pack! (PDF 2.5mb) and get networking! Check out our On-Line database of activists coordinating local campaigns across the country!
- Demand that Starbucks increase its purchasing of Fair Trade coffee, and brew it once a week in all its stores. Fax them from our website!!
- Support the Fair Trade Campaign by becoming a member of Global Exchange. Our campaign wouldn't be possible without the support of concerned people like you!
