Brazil : Beyond Soccer, Sand and Samba
May 26, 2010
- June 04, 2010

Based out of the southern city of Porto Alegre, the birthplace of the World Social Forum and home to Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Polish immigrant communities, this delegation will explore urban and rural grassroots organizing around issues of economic justice and environmental sustainability. Meeting with Afro-Brazilian, youth and other minority groups, we will work to understand how communities from the social periphery are coming together to resist corporate globalization and offer alternative models of civil society participation and development.
Program Highlights:
- Meet with the MST (Landless Workers' Movement) and see how they are transforming their efforts in response to the collapse of the global economy
- Work with street kids involved in urban recycling projects
- Visit an eco-village built with permacultural methodology
- Dialogue with women's groups and other grassroots organizations working against transnational agribusiness efforts to change the landscape and restructure the economy
- Visit sustainable lakeside fishing communities working to preserve their livelihoods
- Travel to the Uruguayan borderlands and view the growing importance of informal commerce and local development
- Move beyond the mega-centers of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo and traverse the stunning southern Brazilian landscape
