Ecuador : Oil and the Environment
November 21, 2009
- November 29, 2009
Join Global Exchange on our upcoming "Oil and the Environment" delegation to Ecuador. Highlighting the country's recent Constitutional victory, which affirms rights of nature and indigenous peoples, this program explores the ways in which Ecuadorians are organizing to resist corporate exploitation and promote environmental justice. Ahead of a landmark ruling, our delegation will foreground the historic court battle against Chevron Corporation, accused of grave environmental damage and the decimation of indigenous communities. As the case comes to a close and Chevron faces $27 billion in liability, we will meet with indigenous leadership, non-governmental organizations, environmental activists, and government officials in order to contextualize the sixteen year trial and its global implications. Based out of the Andean highlands and the Amazon Basin, this delegation aspires to increase awareness on human rights in Ecuador and inspire participants to engage these very struggles upon return to the US.
