Freedom to Travel to Cuba in 2009!

Take Action: Support The End of All Travel Restrictions to Cuba

We have an unprecedented opportunity, this year, to end the restrictions on travel to Cuba, especially for the kind of socially responsible travel that Global Exchange has promoted for the last twenty years!

Let your Congressional Delegation and the Obama Administration know how passionately you feel about your right to TRAVEL TO CUBA:

  • There are "FREEDOM TO TRAVEL" bills in committee in both the House of Representatives (HR 874) and in the Senate
    (S 428)
    . These bills need co-sponsors!

Call or email your Congressional Representative and Senators today and ask them to co-sponsor the bills on the right to travel to Cuba.

    Capitol Switchboard number: (202) 224-3121.

  • The Obama Administration is currently reviewing Cuba Policy with an eye toward CHANGE! But the forces that have held this policy in place for so many years have not given up. President Obama needs to hear from the majority of U.S. citizens who would like to have their right to travel to Cuba restored.

Email the Obama Administration at the office of Valerie Jarrett, Assistant to the President for Public Liaison.

Ask Congress and President Obama to restore to the American people our right to travel to Cuba!

Fifty Years of Failed Cuba Policy is Enough!

As you know, Global Exchange has worked for twenty years to end the U.S. embargo of Cuba.

Along with our many partner organizations, we have identified the strategic opportunity, with the inauguration of President Barack Obama, and a majority Democratic Congress, to end the cruel and ridiculous U.S.-imposed ban on travel by U.S. residents to Cuba, as a first step in building fully normalized relations with our island neighbor.

President Obama has opened up travel for Cuban Americans to visit their families in Cuba, but we must seize this moment to end the travel ban for all U.S. residents once and for all, especially the kind of socially responsible and educational travel Global Exchange is known for.

If we mobilize now, we have the best chance we've ever had to end the travel ban.

    CONGRESS
    H.R. 874

Ask your Congressional Representative to co-sponsor H.R. 874 in the House:

The purpose of H.R. 874 is "To allow travel between the United States and Cuba." The most important thing to remember about the bill is that it will allow travel for all Americans - no exclusions. It was introduced by Representatives Bill Delahunt (D-MA) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ), along with eight original co-sponsors.

Call and/or email your representative today.
    Capitol Switchboard number: (202) 224-3121.

    The message:

"Please co-sponsor H.R. 874, the Delahunt-Flake bill "To allow travel between the United States and Cuba."

This bill, introduced by Rep. Delahunt (D-MA) and Rep. Flake (R-AZ) calls for lifting travel restrictions to Cuba for ALL Americans, restoring our right as citizens of the United States to travel freely, and takes a giant step toward restoring our country's reputation in Latin America and the world.

(If they ask . . . )The original co-sponsors of the bill are Rep. Bill Delahunt [MA-10] and Rep. Jeff Flake [AZ-6]

To co-sponsor H.R. 874 please contact either Cliff Stammerman in Rep. Delahunt's office or Chandler Morse in Rep. Flake's office."

(If they are supportive) say, "Thank you for your support to end this inhumane, out-dated, and, in our opinion, illegal travel ban."

(If they are unsupportive or neutral) say, "Please get more information on this important civil and human rights issue by contacting either Cliff Stammerman in Rep. Delahunt's office or Chandler Morse in Rep. Flake's office."

Check-out the text and current co-sponsors for H.R. 874. Search for bills and enter H.R. 874 in the search box.

    S 428

Ask your Senators to co-sponsor S 428 in the Senate:

Senator Dorgan (D-ND) along with Sen. Lugar (R-IN), Sen. Enzi (R-WY), and Sen. Dodd (D-CT) just introduced legislation in the Senate on Thursday (Feb. 12) calling for the lifting of travel restrictions so that ALL Americans can travel freely to Cuba. Travel for All!

You can determine if your Senator has already become a co-sponsor, by accessing http://www.thomas.gov, searching for "bills" and entering S 428.

    Call and/or email your senators to co-sponsor S 428.
    Capitol Switchboard number: (202) 224-3121.

    The message:

"Please co-sponsor S 428, to allow travel between the United States and Cuba. This bill introduced by Senators Dorgan (D-ND), Enzi (R-WY), Lugar (R-IN), and Dodd (D-CT) calls for lifting travel restrictions to Cuba for ALL Americans, restoring our right as citizens of the United States to travel freely, and takes a giant step toward restoring our country's reputation in Latin America and the world. Thank you for your support in ending this inhumane and out-dated travel ban. To co-sponsor S 428,or to get more information on the bill, please contact Wendy Gnehm in Senator Enzi's office or Brian Moran in Senator Dorgan's office."

    THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION

President Obama is under pressure from the countries of Latin America to lift the U.S. embargo of Cuba as a first step in his diplomatic efforts in Latin America. In April, the President will address the Latin American Summit, all of whose members eagerly await the proposals of our progressive young President. There is great anticipation and hope that President Obama will establish relationships of dignity and humanity between the U.S. and our Latin American neighbors.

Now is the time to let President Obama know that the majority of U.S. citizens would like to be able to travel to Cuba freely and have normal relations with our Cuban neighbors!

Email the Obama Administration and ask him to restore our right to travel.

Thank you for your commitment to ending this extremely onerous aspect of the U.S. Embargo of Cuba, and for answering our calls for action. Together we can use this unique opportunity to end the travel restrictions against US citizens traveling to Cuba, once and for all.
